“Lhakar” translates literally as “White Wednesday”:
1. Wednesday is considered special by Tibetans because it is the Dalai Lama’s soul day.
2. “Lhakar” is a homegrown, Tibetan self-reliance movement embracing the power of strategic nonviolent resistance in spite of China’s intensified crackdown.
Every Wednesday, a growing number of Tibetans are making special effort to wear traditional clothes, speak Tibetan, eat in Tibetan restaurants and buy from Tibetan-owned businesses. Lhakar is a new tactic being used to channel the spirit of resistance into social, cultural and economic activities that are self-constructive* and non-cooperative**.
Tibetans in Tibet are engaging in Lhakar to strengthen Tibetan economy, culture and society. Please support them by making your own personal Lhakar Pledge to take action for Tibet every week
